How Yoga Helps Alleviate Stress

Stress has become such an ordinary part of everyday life for a lot of people that most have already accepted it as something that they just have to live with. However, stress actually has a lot of harmful effects to our health and well-being and it is important to keep this in check.
Yoga is one of the most popular fitness methods, and yoga practitioners swear by the many different benefits it offers. This in part is because the main tenet of yoga is mindfulness, which means being present in the moment, free from all external distractions and worries.

Some of the things practised in yoga include deep breathing, muscle relaxation, meditation and the different postures which help release tension and stress from your body. Those who have been regularly practising yoga have been found to have increased energy, focus and less stress indicators such as a high heart rate and acute body pains. Other benefits of yoga include lower blood pressure, reduced levels of cortisol which is known as the stress hormone, better sleeping patterns, less asthma attacks for those who are suffering from the condition, increased blood circulation, muscle strength and flexibility and less cravings for smoking. Aside from the physical benefits, one of the best benefits of yoga is that it helps improve your overall sense of well-being.

Contrary to popular belief, doing yoga does not have to be complicated and expensive. You can start by watching videos and reading books about yoga so you can start doing yoga at home if you do not have the budget to join yoga classes in a studio. Set aside time in your schedule for meditation and for a weekly yoga session. Even just a few minutes a day of calm and relaxation can help soothe your nerves and release stress from your mind and body. You can start slow by starting with the easier poses and then moving your way up to the more challenging and difficult poses. There are different kinds of yoga, and as you progress in your practice, you can work with a mentor to find the type of yoga practice that works best for you not only physically but also mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Yoga is an offspring of a spiritual practice in the Eastern traditional religions, and the physical aspect is just one part of it.

When doing yoga, always wear comfortable clothes like yoga pants, track pants or gym wear that will be comfortable enough for you to move in. Yoga involves doing several different poses while maintaining proper breathing that is why it is important that what you wear will be conducive to your routine without distracting you because it is too tight, too hot or uncomfortable.
